Supervising and steering a project
Everybody who has already built a house knows that many mistakes can be recognized and detected only on the building site. If you are not constantly present at the building site, the danger of mistakes increases and their implementation may escape the attention until it is too late. The same applies to projects where it is mandatory that the Project managers shall be constantly present at the "building site of the project".
Some project managers think that it is sufficient to check the plan and forget that their primary task is to get direct impression about progress "on the spot". "Management by walking around" is a priority for project managers.
The structure of project supervision requires the project manager to be cognizant of:
- How to distribute tasks regarding the project
- How to document changes
- What kind of recording systems are to be use
- What kind of communication is to be use
- How to handle short-term changes
- How to document – what, where and how long
- To whom to report
